United Fresh August Market Report 2024 image

August Market Information

Fresh Produce Highlights:

British crop has finally arrived for Brassicas and Carrots, which means the eye-wateringly high prices should start to fall as we see more and more product come into distribution.

Potatoes are still a tough subject as we continue to experience the shortage. Mids remain expensive as do Bakers, despite  issues with quality. However, Koffmans Washed Blues are back! It’s with great pleasure we welcome back the popular product into our supply chain as of the start of August.

Summer is for bowls of berries, and there is no better than our UK berries right now! Do not miss out on the beautiful Strawberries, Raspberries and Blueberries. As we always say, strawberries are not just for Wimbledon…

We can’t forget to mention the short but sweet UK Cherry season too. The trees can produce up to 7000 cherries each year, but even so, the punnets always fly out of the depots as soon as they arrive.

UK salad production is still in full gear, and we are seeing the best quality and quantity of Baby Leaf, Iceberg, Little Gem, Cos, Lollo Biondi, Red Oak, Radicchio, Rocket, Round LettuceFrisse and Prepped Bags too.

To add even more colour to your plate, why not order some UK BeetrootCandyRed and Golden varieties are all in abundance this month.

Fish Highlights:

August is a transitional month for fish as the Icelandic quota is coming to an end, alongside boats running out of quota and tying up for the holidays. Norwegian boats normally catch plenty of Coley at this time of the year, but not so much Cod and Haddock as opposed to the winter and spring months where they are plenty. This is a key component as to why Cod and Haddock are having a price hike, despite also being a lot softer than normal.

Plaice supply is still steady, despite the higher price points. Unlike Lemon Sole and Dover Sole which we are seeing a particularly patchy supply until we hit the peak seasons of September to October and May to June.

Farmed Salmon is looking to continue to remain stable and low cost into August, until a possible increase in September. So, take advantage whilst you can!

Some products that are must-haves from Cornwall are Wild BassMackerelSkate WingsBrillTurbotMonkfish and Halibut. Which will you be ordering?

Dairy Highlights:

We’re seeing some price increases from our dairy teams regarding core items such as ButterCream and Milk. Alongside an increase from Cheese producers, which is yet to hit, but soon to be expected. This is due to demand after the summer holiday period which will play a key part in future prices, especially with concerns around coverage for the latter part of the year amidst a background of lower supply.

Our team is always here for any questions or queries you may have about any of the information in this report.
